What does a Drone Film Festival and a Drone Race have in common? Enter Randy Scott Slavin, founder of the New York City Drone Film Festivaland now Producer and Director of the Liberty Cup FPV Drone Race to be held this July in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Last year’s film festival had upwards of 5,000 participants and Randy expects similar crowds at what is being plugged as the first drone race set against the New York City skyline. The event scheduled for July 30th and 31st will take place at the Liberty Science Center, the same venue as the film festival. Pilots from across the northeast are expected to participate in this two tier competition.
The Miniquad racing will feature 100 racers with the top three qualifying for the U.S. Drone Nationals to be held on August 5th-7th on Governor’s Island, just 800 yards from lower Manhattan. ESPN plans to cover the event live.
The Freestyle competition will include only twenty pilots who will be pre-selected via a video qualifier. The top freestyle competitor will also qualify for the U.S. Drone Nationals.
For interested pilots, registration is available here.
Randy was not ready to announce his list of sponsors but expressed his excitement on the quality and quantity of sponsor interest. Also missing at this time was the prize purses for the winning pilots.
