Ever since the World Drone Prix in Dubai kicked the door open, big names have begun turning their views towards Drone Racing. With the IDRA gaining ESPN access and the DRL finding sponsorships from huge names like Stephen Ross (the owner of the Miami Dolphins), it’s no surprise that other groups are aiming for a piece of the pie.
DR1 Racing is an effort made by the people over at Mountain Dew to get into Drone Racing. Some of the biggest names in the sport have been persuaded to join the DR1 Invitational, including some of the most well-known drone pilots like Charpu, UmmaGawd, and BanniUK (The young man who won a quarter of a million dollars at the World Drone Prix in Dubai).
The DR1 Invitational is their inaugural event of their brand. It is planned to be held at Sepulveda Dam in Los Angeles, California from June 25 – 26. This is their biggest planned live event, and will be streamed on their twitch channel.
However, DR1 Racing is aiming to be more than just a racing league. Using both youtube and twitch, they have content creators bringing news, drone tech, test flights, and other types of content to their viewers. To get their audience both interested and involved with their videos, there are events like “Twitch picks the last pilot (for the invitational)”.
